Pearls of Wisdom : Who is the True Guru? – H.H. Srimajjagadguru Shankaracharya SriSri Raghaveshwara Bharathi Mahaswamiji

Sri Samsthana

Once, a man set out on a search of a true guru. Whomever he met, he felt they are  either cheats, or hypocrites. Finally, he thought that he had found a true guru. He informed his relatives and friends that he found a  sadhguru. His friends asked him-
“How did you recognise the true guru? What standards did you use to judge him?”

The man replied-
“I identified the true guru from his one sentence.”

The friends asked him-
“What is that sentence?”

The  man replied-
“The guru told me that that I was a true and complete disciple.”

My guru, my disciple, my car, my house- these attachments do not make a true guru or shishya. They are mere a display of ego.

A true guru evaluates the disciple from the angle of Atma. Just a darshan is enough for the guru to identify his sishya and vice versa. One who removes the strings of attachment and shows the path of self realization is the True guru- Sadhguru.
